Driving an RV in South Africa

South Africa's well-maintained national roads make it a surprisingly accessible country for RV travel, even for first-timers. Vehicles drive on the left-hand side of the road, a key point for visitors from North America and most of Europe to remember. While modern motorhomes are comfortable and handle much like a large car, it's wise to familiarize yourself with their dimensions, especially height and width, for navigating smaller towns or tree-lined roads. Our driving guides cover everything from road rules and typical speed limits to advice on fuel stops and navigating mountain passes. We aim to build your confidence so you can relax and enjoy the incredible scenery from the driver's seat.

The campground infrastructure in South Africa is robust, catering to every type of RV traveler. The South African National Parks (SANParks) board operates excellent campsites in prime locations like Kruger, Addo Elephant, and Tsitsikamma National Parks, offering a chance to stay right in the heart of the wilderness. Beyond the national parks, a vast network of private holiday resorts and caravan parks provides additional options, often with more amenities like swimming pools, laundry facilities, and electrical hookups (known locally as "power points"). Booking campsites in popular parks and during peak seasons is highly recommended and can often be done online months in advance. Our guides help you navigate these options to find the perfect spots to park for the night.

Compare suppliers & vehicle classes

Choosing the right vehicle is one of the most important decisions for your RV trip. Motorhomes in South Africa typically come in three main classes. Class C models, with their characteristic cab-over bunk, are the most common and offer a great balance of space and drivability for families or groups. Class B campervans are more compact and nimble, ideal for couples who prioritize easier driving and parking. Larger Class A vehicles, which resemble a bus, provide the most interior space and luxury. Our comparison guides delve into the specifics of the vehicles offered by different suppliers, helping you understand the layouts, features, and an ideal group size for each. By comparing your options, you can confidently select the motorhome that best suits your needs.

What Our Customers Say

We just returned from a long three-month caravan vacation in Europe. We rented the vehicle from Bandana and we're very pleased with the level of service we received during the preparations for the trip. Luckily we didn't need help from Bandana during the drive itself, but their explanation videos really helped, and they also handled the small special requests we had with a smile. Many thanks to Avi and the whole team.

Hello, Receiving the caravan was efficient and quick. At moments I felt it was a bit too fast.. lots of complex information about operating the various systems to take in over a half-hour explanation.. lucky my husband is a mechanical engineer and managed to handle the various systems.. I'm not sure everyone would manage. They didn't check with us the covers for opening the slide-outs. The day after pickup, while driving, we heard a noise and it turned out the fabric over the slide-out came loose. There was damage and there was a feeling that this was "dropped" on us, and we had to pay $1,000 deductible for the damage. They weren't willing to hear anything. Stiff in their approach and not very pleasant. I recommend taking out a deductible-cancellation insurance for cases like this. We had a few issues (electricity that didn't work, water pump that didn't work). We contacted the number they gave us and they helped us by phone.. it took about an hour.. they gave good service.
